Milnor PLC-5 refit: MENTOR control replaced with ControlLogix

Milnor EU service desk: limited capacity, long response times

Pellerin Milnor Corporation is based in Kenner, Louisiana. The European service network is thin: parts come from the US, lead times of 4–12 weeks are common. PLC-5 and SLC-500 processors have been declared End-of-Life by Rockwell Automation. GCG delivers control replacement with European parts and service capacity.

Milnor washer-extractors and Continuous Batch Washers (CBW) in use in the Benelux run almost without exception on Allen-Bradley PLC-5 or SLC-500 controls with the proprietary MENTOR control system as HMI layer. Rockwell Automation has declared both platforms End-of-Life. GCG replaces the PLC-5 or SLC-500 with a Rockwell ControlLogix or CompactLogix platform, including conversion of MENTOR parameters and wash recipes to Studio 5000. The MENTOR-familiar operator interface is replicated 1:1 in FactoryTalk or PanelView Plus so operators can continue without retraining.

Technical architecture MENTOR/PLC-5 platform

Allen-Bradley PLC-5 / SLC-500 CPU

PLC-5 on 1771 backplane or SLC-500 in 1746 chassis. Both platforms declared End-of-Life by Rockwell. Refurb processors available but US lead times: 4–12 weeks. No guarantee on remaining service life.

MENTOR control system (proprietary)

Milnor MENTOR is a layer above the Allen-Bradley PLC that manages wash recipes, temperature profiles, and dosing times via a proprietary HMI interface. MENTOR software and documentation are not publicly available. GCG has reverse-engineering expertise for MENTOR parameter extraction.

1771 / 1746 I/O modules

Analogue modules for temperature (RTD/thermocouple) and water level (4–20 mA). Digital I/O for valves, pumps, and motor starters. No hotswap on PLC-5/1771; SLC-500/1746 has limited hotswap on certain module types.

No remote diagnostics / EU support

Milnor machines in the Benelux are typically supported remotely by phone from the US when faults occur. On-site service via a rare EU importer or own maintenance staff. No remote PLC access; every diagnosis requires on-site presence.

Installed base Benelux

North Holland / Amsterdam

Hotel laundries (five-star segment), AMC/OLVG laundry, textile rental (Elis NL, CWS NL) in the region.

South Holland / Rotterdam-Rijnmond

Erasmus MC central laundry, port-area hospitality, workwear rental for Porthos and port-related companies.

East Flanders / Antwerp

Hospital laundries (UZ Ghent, UZA Antwerp), Belgian hotel chains, textile rental in the Antwerp port corridor.

Migration platform: Rockwell ControlLogix / CompactLogix

GCG migrates to the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix 5580 (larger CBW) or CompactLogix 5380 (washer-extractors) platform, with Studio 5000 Logix Designer and PanelView Plus 7 or FactoryTalk View SE as HMI. The MENTOR parameter interface is replicated 1:1 so operators work with familiar screens.

Migration steps

  1. 1

MENTOR parameter dump & PLC audit

Complete extraction of MENTOR wash recipes, temperature profiles, dosing parameters, and alarm configuration. RSLogix 5/500 program export. I/O module inventory and wiring diagram review.

  2. 2

    ControlLogix / CompactLogix chassis engineering

I/O channel mapping (1771/1746 → 1756/1769), processor and chassis selection, PanelView Plus 7 specification, cabling plan, optionally new control cabinet.

  3. 3

    Studio 5000 engineering & FAT

Ladder conversion RSLogix 5/500 → Studio 5000, MENTOR interface replicated in FactoryTalk View / PanelView Plus 7, wash recipes imported, Factory Acceptance Test on test cabinet.

  4. 4

    SAT + MENTOR recipe verification

On-site commissioning, verification of all MENTOR wash recipes on production material, operator training, 4-week follow-up. Downtime typically 48–72 hrs (washer-extractor or small CBW); 72–96 hrs for large CBW lines.

FAQ

What exactly is the MENTOR control system?

MENTOR is Milnor's proprietary control interface, a software layer above the Allen-Bradley PLC that manages wash recipes, temperature profiles, and dosing times. The interface is not publicly documented. GCG has experience reverse-engineering MENTOR parameters for migration.

Can I still get Milnor spare parts in the Benelux?

Milnor has no own service entity in the EU. Parts are ordered via the US or through scarce European importers. Lead times of 4–12 weeks are normal for PLC-5/SLC-500 hardware. After the GCG migration, all control parts are available in Europe via Rockwell Automation Benelux.

Are the MENTOR wash recipes preserved?

Yes. GCG extracts all wash recipes and process parameters from the MENTOR system, documents them, and transfers them 1:1 into the new FactoryTalk recipe system. The operator screen is designed to resemble MENTOR. Minimal retraining needed.

What does a Milnor refit cost?

A washer-extractor or small CBW costs EUR 16,000–26,000 including engineering, hardware, and commissioning. Large CBW lines (multiple modules): EUR 26,000–45,000. Exact quote after MENTOR dump and I/O audit.

How long is the machine down?

Typically 48–72 hrs for a washer-extractor or small CBW. A large multi-module CBW: 72–96 hrs. GCG always plans commissioning over a weekend to minimise production loss.
